São Jorge Castle timingsAddress: R. de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100-129 Lisboa, Portugal
Access:
The castle is situated atop São Jorge hill, Lisbon’s highest point, so reaching it involves an uphill walk. The streets leading to the castle are narrow and do not have parking facilities, so driving directly to the castle is not recommended. Visitors who arrive by car should park downtown near the waterfront and then use public transport or walk to the castle
1147 Restaurante, also known as Lovely Castelo, is the castle’s main restaurant. It is located within the historic Lions’ Hall. Its unique location inside the castle walls provides a cozy atmosphere, with a terrace overlooking breathtaking views of Lisbon, the Tagus River, and the city’s rooftops.

You can walk up through the Alfama district (steep but scenic), or take the tram 28 or 12, a tuk-tuk, or a taxi. The Lisbon public elevator (Elevador do Castelo) is also a good option for cutting down the climb.
The Camera Obscura is a unique optical device inside the Tower of Ulysses that offers a live 360° view of Lisbon using mirrors and lenses. It’s included with your general admission ticket.
Yes! Entry to the castle is included in certain combo tickets with the Lisbon Card, depending on the variant (24, 48, or 72 hours). It’s a great option if you’re planning to visit multiple Lisbon attractions.
Plan to spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the castle grounds, towers, archaeological site, and gardens. If you’re joining a guided tour or taking your time with photos, allow up to 3 hours.
Yes! You can join a guided tour in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French, or explore at your own pace with an audio guide. These options give great insights into the castle’s history and hidden corners.
Absolutely! Kids love exploring the towers, walking along the walls, and spotting the colorful peacocks in the gardens. Just keep an eye on little ones around the steep staircases and high ramparts.
Some areas of the castle, like the main courtyard and exhibition spaces, are partially accessible, but many parts—including the towers and ramparts—have stairs or uneven surfaces. There are accessible restrooms and ramps where possible.
When visiting São Jorge Castle, dress in layers to adapt to Lisbon's changing weather, ensuring you're comfortable in both warm and cool conditions. Opt for sturdy, comfortable shoes as you'll be walking on uneven surfaces throughout the castle grounds.
