São Jorge Castle directions
Access & entrances
  • West Gatehouse (Main Entrance): Located on Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo. It leads directly into the central courtyard and the ticket office area.
  • South Vaulted Passage: This entrance is accessible via Largo do Chão da Feira and offers a scenic route from the Alfama district, allowing visitors to experience the charming neighborhood before entering the castle grounds
  • North Gatehouse: Found on Rua do Recolhimento, this entrance provides a quieter and more secluded path to the castle's eastern side, ideal for visitors seeking a less crowded approach.

Access:

The castle is situated atop São Jorge hill, Lisbon’s highest point, so reaching it involves an uphill walk. The streets leading to the castle are narrow and do not have parking facilities, so driving directly to the castle is not recommended. Visitors who arrive by car should park downtown near the waterfront and then use public transport or walk to the castle

Facilities
  • Gardens and rest areas: The shaded castle gardens are a tranquil escape, complete with benches and peacocks roaming freely. These spots are ideal for a quiet rest, a bit of people-watching,
  • Restrooms: Clean and accessible toilets are available throughout the grounds, including at the entrance and near the café, so you can explore the site without worry.
  • Gift Shop: Before you leave, don’t forget to stop by the castle shop, where you’ll find curated souvenirs like historical replicas, books, local crafts, and charming keepsakes that capture the spirit of Lisbon.
  • Accessibility: While parts of the castle—like the ramparts and towers—can be steep or uneven due to the site’s medieval structure, many areas are accessible for visitors with limited mobility. Ramps and designated paths are available where possible.

São Jorge Castle visitor tips

  • Summers in Lisbon are scorching we recommend wearing a hat and going with a bottle of water in case you need to wait in the queue
  • Head to the Camera Obscura in the Tower of Ulysses for a real-time, 360° view of Lisbon.
  • The castle grounds include cobblestones, uneven steps, and sloping paths, so sturdy, comfortable footwear is a must. Your feet will thank you after climbing the towers and walking the medieval walls.
  • Don’t be surprised if you hear a loud call—the castle’s resident peacocks love to strut their stuff through the gardens. They’re beautiful, playful, and perfect for a fun photo op (from a respectful distance, of course!).
  • If you’re planning to visit other top sights like the Belém Tower or Jerónimos Monastery, look into combo tickets or the Lisbon Card, which can save you time and money.
  • While the castle is stunning year-round, clear days offer the best views. If you're in Lisbon for a few days, try visiting when the weather’s looking bright.
